Banksia Hill is the only detention centre of its kind in WA to accommodate male and female offenders aged 10 – 17 years. Site and building design responds to the principles of normalisation, flexibility and privacy, offering detainees the opportunity to develop self discipline in preparation for their return to society. The original centre was designed by Spowers in 1995, where the directors of TAG were formerly senior project architects.
In 2009 TAG was engaged to deliver a $28.50m expansion including standard and specialised accommodation to meet rising detainee numbers. An in-depth understanding of construction and services sequencing was required to deliver three separate, complex works stages to allow the continued operation of the secure facility.
